Nuthin' to do Del Rio - 17&18 April
This is the weekend Del Rio catches its breath in preparation for the George Paul Memorial Bullriding weekend. Get your tickets now in preparation for Del Rio’s annual blowout. Easiest way is to visit the fairground and if your military, flash an ID and get a discount.
Despite the fact the social scene isn’t going full tilt, there is enough going on to fill up a social calendar.
Soup du Jour, one of the Upstagers quarterly productions, is Friday and Saturday at the Paul Poag. The play begins at 8 p.m., cost is $14 in advance, $18 at the door.
The Whitehead Museum’s Cajun Fest was another huge success.
This year’s event featured fried catfish, crawfish, boiled shrimp and a few other delicacies from the bayou, along with the sounds of Texas Cajun band Cher La-bas from San Antonio.
Michael Diaz, Museum Director, who was cooking up a batch of hush puppies, said they were hoping to top last year’s mark of $2,000 raised for the museum’s budget.
Occasionally,the accusation is thrown at the Queen City that there is nothing to do here.
Well, we’re going to attempt to dispel that wicked myth here on a weekly basis when we list some of the top things to do.
Here’s what’s coming:
Easter weekend – Sleep on the Creek. It’s an Easter thing gringos don’t get but it’s been happening here for years. Easter weekend is when families, groups get together, mark off their space and have a good ol’ time marking this sacred Holy weekend with a campout at ------- Park.
Del Rio High School Career Technical Education Welding students brought home 18 first place awards, a Best of Show and a Bronze Medal in the State Skills U.S.A. Leadership and Skills Champions held at Corpus Christi March 25 through 28.
They won “Best in Show” honors with “Octoburner” Fire Pit and Grill which Del Rio hasn’t won since 1992 when the barbecue pit “Terminator” won.
A Del Rio native and major league prospect found himself out of the Astros minor league camp and working with the minor leagures Friday.
However, it may have been a blessing in disguise for Luis Flores, now a Houston Astros minor league prospect as he will get more game action in the minor league camp.
“I knew I wasn’t one of the 25 guys who was going to be on the major league roster but it’s great to be in the big league camp,” Flores said. “I’m still wearing the uniform to play every day and that’s what drives me.”
